Yankees 4-5 Start Needs To Stop

Posted on May 17, 2008 in Recreation and Sports by admin

The Yankees 4-5 start to the 2008 MLB season is not what Manager Joe Girardi, or the Yankees’ brass had in mind. It is not time to panic, but it is time to be concerned.

The Yankees early season schedule set up for a feast, with the Tampa Bay Rays and Kansas City Royals the main courses. The Yankees are the ones playing like turkeys, settled in the middle of the American League pack.

A 4-5 is not a crisis, but the play of the Yankees is alarming. A terrible offense, with no power game and no small ball, does not bode well, especially with the Boston Red Sox and other quality opponents on the horizon.

In addition, the pitching has been all right, but inconsistent at times. Having no run support, with a vaunted offense that was supposed to mask any pitching difficulties, is not making life for young Yankee arms any easier.

The Red Sox are 4-5 as well, keeping the Yankees company as they both look up at, believe it or not, the 6-1 Baltimore Orioles. That will change soon enough, as the Orioles will fly back to earth and the pack. The question is more about the Yankees, and their ability to break out of their funky offensive performance so far.

You would have to believe that with that lineup, not an easy out in the group, that they will rise their game to an agreeable level soon enough. However, if things do not improve, a hole is being dug that could be difficult to climb out of once the weather warms.
