The Health Benefits of Love
Posted on October 23, 2009 in Health by admin
While the Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet proved that love can be tragic and the song Love Stinks by the J. Geils band shows that love can hurt, it is important to never forget all the great things that love can do for you. It's healthy not only for your emotional and mental state, but your actual physical being. Here are some examples:
Forever Young
Well, maybe not literally. But the giving and receiving of love does increase the hormone DHEA, also known as the “anti-aging” hormone. This hormone is released by the pituitary gland, and is proven to improve immune and neurological function. It also serves as a stress reducer. Basically, it is the mother of all hormones in your body, and love helps produce it.
Hearts
Though your heart may be beating stronger when your loved one comes close, this is not the only thing that love does for your heart. Dr. Dean Ornish conducted a study with 10,000 men with no previous history of chest pains over time. Despite risk factors such as diabetes and high blood pressure, the men who were in loving relationships in which their significant others demonstrated their love experienced half the chest pains as men who didn't feel loved.
Safety First!
People who are married are less likely to smoke, drink, or do drugs. Married people are less likely to be victims of sexual assault or domestic violence. Married men are over 100% less likely to die of stress-related illnesses such as heart disease.
Alone?
Don't despair! Studies have shown that people who contribute their time to others by volunteering. Studies have been done that show that people who show love for others by helping the less fortunate have an increased immune system because stress has been reduced. Reduced stress also leads to pain relief, especially if you suffer from things such as chronic headaches. Reduced stress over time also keeps you looking and feeling young.
Keeping and Finding Love
Don't let love fall out of your grasp, and never give up! If your relationship is struggling but you're still in love, dont be too proud to look into marriage counseling or couples workshops. If you're single and having a tough time meeting someone, you should try speed dating or online dating. It's a big world out there, and your perfect person is in it.
