Fall Bass Fishing - A Trip To Remember!

Posted on March 25, 2008 in Recreation and Sports by admin

Bass fishing is my passion, and I am going to take you on a trip that would excite even the best of fishermen. Me and Ed Majors, my brother-in-law, have been fishing together for a long time. It was one week prior to fishing a major tournament that we fish every year for charity. We decided to go out and practice. Well, this practice trip turned out to be one of the best trips we’d ever been on in our lives!

It was the end of September and we both knew what we had to do. We decided, basically, to go with a soft plastic bait called a Fluke and top water baits like Zara Spooks. We started out fishing a shallow water hump that ranged from one foot to five feet. As soon as we pulled up to this fishing hole it was on! The first cast landed a three pounder and every cast after that we pulled in a fish ranging in size from two to four pounds. When we had fished this spot out, we had landed about ten fish. We then headed to the next place. This was a long, shallow tapering point and again the first cast netted us a five pounder. We sat there and caught fish after fish on a Fluke. By eight o’clock in the morning we had boated twenty bass ranging from two to five pounds. Our best five probably would have tipped the scale at seventeen or eighteen pounds. This would be a stringer anyone would be proud of.

But the day got even better. After the sun came up good, we continued to throw Flukes and crank baits all day. Fishing shallow structure, meaning one foot to five feet, all day long we managed to boat thirty two bass ranging in size from two to five pounds each. We fished shallow roadbeds, points, humps and anything that consisted of skinny water.
It was late September on Lake Logan Martin in Alabama. Even though the water is still quiet warm this time of year, the bass are preparing for winter. This is the time of year when they group up and are easy to catch. But, also, in early fall the weather changes drastically and quickly. One day it will be 85 degrees and the next it will be 60. This has a big impact on bass fishing here.

So, come tournament day, everything changed. The blast off time for the tournament was safe daylight, but the fog rolled in. All 50 boats were crowded around waiting for the fog to lift so we could take off safely. It took nearly two hours for the fog to clear. We raced to our first stop, where we had caught our biggest fish, but came away empty handed. We tried our next spot and same thing – zilch! It was like that all day long. We managed to catch four fish that would measure. Come weigh-in time, twenty five boats had zeroed out and the winner only had 12 pounds.

Fall fishing is a very complicated time to fish because of the different fronts that constantly move thru. Weather does play a big part in bass fishing, so be patient and stay focused. That fall fishing trip could turn into one of the most memorable days you’ll ever have!
